The Industry Take on the 2022 BRIT Awards

We don’t know about you, but it feels like 2022 has started off on the right foot. Although we’re all cautious about being lulled into a false sense of security, it does feel great to revel in normality once again – and Tuesday night was the perfect example, as the BRIT awards went ahead as planned, with a live audience and incredible red carpet to boot. In further exciting news, 2022 also marked the first year that the Brits removed unnecessary gendered categories; a momentous moment in British history.

Fast forward to Wednesday morning and the Brits red carpet looks dominated our conversations, as we discussed all of our favourite looks (and the not-so-favourite ones)… like we weren’t observing make-up free, with a top knot in our pjs only 12 hours before. We caught up with a few of our hair industry friends to find out what they thought about the best of the red carpet looks… which was your fave?

As always, Brit Awards co-host Maya Jama knocked it out of the park. Colour Specialist, Michelle Brace, says: “Maya Jama stole the Brits for me. That sleek, shiny effortless glam is giving me gorgeous Kardashian vibes”.

Anna Stubbs, Salon Manager at Brown Thomas agrees, adding: “I loved Maya Jama’s homage to Cher – she oozed glamour and was rocking the liquid hair trend. Your best friend for creating this look is a strengthening mask, humidity fighting products and a trusty set of straighteners.”

Freelance stylist Cimone Cheveux concluded: “This woman can do no wrong! Another all-black outfit for her, but wow – she looks sensational, and the sleek, pulled-back hair look worked beautifully.”

After a lengthy hiatus, Adele was back on British shores and looking glam as ever as she swept up three awards.

Marina Hodgins, owner of Fringe Benefits in Gloucester says: “Adele was glowing, with a timeless bouncy blowout that’s totally classic and utterly glam for that ultimate red-carpet look.”.

Freelance Stylist, Gráinne McClelland agreed, commenting: “Adele’s, simple, elegant look oozes classic Hollywood glamour. It’s a timeless look that I love!”

The much-loved ex-Pussycat Doll and Brit implant, Ashley Roberts, stepped out in a showstopping, super-sexy look.

Arkitec Hair Design Colour Specialist, Fiona Canning McGinty, says: “My favourite look from the Brits has to be Ashley Roberts. I love how she has transitioned from a simple hairstyle to a gorgeous, layered look with heavy bangs. Her beautiful blonde colour gave it a pretty ‘girl next door’ look, while the texture adds a hint of rebellion. Simple but stylish!”

Gracie Whelband, stylist at Mewies & Co. agrees, adding: “I absolutely loved Ashley Roberts shaggy mullet – it’s proper old school rock n’ roll!”

Bree Runway turned heads for all the right reasons with her gold-leaf lool. Charlene Malcolm says: “I absolutely love Bree Runway’s top knot with the gold foil along the sides. The added gold transformed an everyday messy bun into an elegant updo. Teamed with regal accessories, it was a match made in heaven!”

Before (and after!) styling out her mid-performance trip, Anne-Marie rocked a stunning high-pony. Salon owner Coral Jade says: “I absolutely loved Anne-Marie’s sleek platinum ponytail. It looked so effortless and stylish and is a really popular look amongst my hair up clients right now.”

Mewies & Co. co-owner Jemma Mewies agrees, adding: “Anne-Marie’s slicked high pony and feline eyeliner flicks were stunning – my favourite look of the night!”

Måneskin bassist, Victoria De Angelis, owned her signature look. Curl Specialist Tori Kiff, says: “I loved Victoria’s hair with its grungy 90s vibe. This totally wearable look has heaps of visible texture, with the shaping cut skimming her cheekbones and bringing focus to her gorgeous bone structure.”

International Song of the Year winner, Olivia Rodrigo, stunned the audience with her long locks and simple silver slip dress. Do My Hair salon owner, Barb Mahony, says: “Olivia Rodrigo’s soft mermaid waves fell perfectly and complemented her overall look beautifully, giving her a dreamy ethereal glow.”

Love Island presenter Laura Whitmore achieved the ultimate wet-look for a gorgeous, high-fashion feel. Freelance stylist Cimone Cheveux says: “This is such a different look to see on Laura and she wore it so well! Wet-look hair with that grungy feel can be quite hard to achieve, but it’s been executed brilliantly. Absolute goals!”

Charlene Malcolm says: “Laura Whitmore’s jewelled embellished dress made her look like an absolute goddess and the complementary hair accessories were the perfect finishing touch!”
