TRENDSPIRATION! Jaleesa Jaikaran & Justin Toves-Vincillione
When it comes to trends, Ulta Beauty’s educators know it’s about more than staying current – it’s about helping stylists connect their skills with what clients want in real life. For Justin Toves-Vincillione, that starts with confidence. He said: “If you’re clear on what you’re good at, you can pivot into your take on that trend. Trendspiration is all about that – it’s the foundational skills and how you evolve them into what’s trending.”
Ulta Beauty Pro Team Make Up Artisit, Jaleesa Jaikaran echoed the importance of flexibility, telling us: “It’s our job to be able to decipher a client’s inspo pic and adapt it. Someone might ask for a look, but they really mean they want their version of it. That means understanding different skin tones, textures, undertones – being well-versed so you can customize in a way that truly suits them.”
Both educators stressed that mastering trend translation with Trendspiration can elevate the entire client experience. Justin said: “In our Trendspiration classes we have an exercise called the Pinterest Lookup. Clients show us these inspo pics all the time – so we highlight that for our stylists. In one class, we lined up four images of ‘Sunset Layers’ – the same cut on different models. There was a textured model with a blowout, a Latina model with straightened hair, and two blonde models. The cut was identical, but the vibe changed because of color. That sparks great conversations – like when a client with jet-black hair asks for this cut. They might really want the dimension that highlights bring. Suddenly, you’re not just giving them a haircut – you’re offering a whole transformation.”
Jaleesa added that the same applies in makeup: “Everyone wants that inspo look ‘with a little of this, a little of that.’ Our job is to translate it – but also to educate and guide clients on what works best for that individual, with their unique coloring, face shape, eye color, and so on.”
