DFAM Launches “Yo Misma Fui Mi Ruta” in Puetro Rico

In March 2025, DFAM proudly launched its newest initiative in Puerto Rico, “Yo Misma Fui Mi Ruta” (“I Am My Own Path”), an employment development program designed to empower survivors of domestic violence to achieve economic independence.

This transformative program was created in partnership with Taller Salud, a feminist, community-based nonprofit in Loíza, Puerto Rico, and Danny Lozada Salon. It aims to help women break the cycle of violence by equipping them with the skills needed to build sustainable careers in the beauty industry. “Helping someone on their journey and providing them with the tools and access to new opportunities is what this program is about,” said Luis Burgos.

At the heart of the initiative is a three-month professional development curriculum, created and led by DFAM Board Member and Head of Education, Debbie Chirolla“The goal is that participants will be able to increase their income by applying what they learn in the course,” Chirolla explained. “The program covers the basics of hairstyling and entrepreneurship skills, offering an on-ramp to those who want to pursue additional studies in the beauty field.” With a strong background in education and beauty industry training, Chirolla generously donated her time and expertise to guide participants through the early stages of their professional journey.

To celebrate the launch, DFAM hosted a breakfast reception on March 3, 2025, attended by community partners, supporters, and volunteers. During the event, participants received top-of-the-line salon tools—including mannequin heads, haircutting shears, hair clippers, and blow dryers—generously donated by Hanzo Nation, Solano, Andis Clippers, and Giell.

This program would not be possible without the unwavering support of our partners and the trust of the women participating. Special thanks to Taller Salud, and especially to Ilia Vázquez and Ángela Cruz, for their leadership and commitment to recruiting and supporting participants throughout the program. Founded in 1979, Taller Salud has worked for decades to improve women’s access to health, reduce community violence, and promote economic development through education and activism.

We are deeply grateful to all of our participants for believing in DFAM and taking the courageous step to build a brighter, independent future. “Yo Misma Fui Mi Ruta” is more than a program—it is a path forward.

Special thanks to Nicole Ortiz for her course on entrepreneurship, Enrique Bello for his workshop on barbering, and Necromancy for their makeup workshop.
