Janet Maitland Hairdresser Celebrates 30 Years In The Salon

Lisa Price, hairdresser and salon manager at Janet Maitland Hair Excellence in Hetton, is celebrating her 30th work anniversary with the company, having joined the salon group as a Saturday girl aged 17.

Lisa began her career after a chance meeting with Janet Maitland at a local function, who offered her a placement while she completed her hairdressing qualifications. Lisa then joined the salon full time after college and at age 20, was given the opportunity to manage the new Hetton salon. She helped to grow this salon business from the ground up and also undertook further qualifications to become an educator and assessor, supporting the next generation of stylists.

Lisa says: “It has been a privilege to work at Janet Maitland for 30 years. It is such a wonderful, supportive company with a fantastic team. I have never once thought about leaving because I know I am supported and cared for here.

“Anything I have wanted to do over the last three decades, from learning new skills, qualifications, creative work or events, has been backed by the directors and I feel completely fulfilled in my role. I truly love our brilliant team and very happy to be part of the Janet Maitland family.”

Lisa’s anniversary comes in the same year as Janet Maitland Hair Excellence celebrates 45 years in business – a huge milestone for any salon. The last 45 years has brought many incredible high points and achievements for the business, along with some incredibly sad losses too. It was in January 2021 that founder Janet Maitland sadly passed away.

Janet was an exceptional woman who adored her clients, her team and most importantly her husband, Peter. Janet opened her first salon in 1979 and grew it to three three-salon group that is known and loved across Durham today. Janet was a talented hairdresser who was committed to her craft, but the nurturing and helping of others to develop and grow was truly her vocation. Her lifelong passion was for educating and giving opportunities to young people not only in Durham but around the world.

Janet found her calling when she was invited to be a part of the Schwarzkopf Professional Shaping Futures initiative, for which she became an ambassador and headed it up for several years. Shaping Futures teaches hairdressing skills to disadvantaged children across the globe with the goal of helping them to launch into a career in hairdressing by the end of the programme. Janet trained young hairdressers in India, Jordan and The Philippines.

Peter McDermott, Director at Janet Maitland, says: “Lisa is a superb ambassador for both the company and the hairdressing profession in general. As well as a valued member of the team, throughout her career she has taken part in photo shoots, competitions as well as working alongside Gok Wan and appearing on stage at Wembley.

“Lisa is the embodiment of what a professional hairdresser is; a caring, creative, perfectionist, who is fantastic with her clients and team. I could not ask for a better colleague. She has been a great friend, a tower of strength through some really difficult times after losing Janet.”

Lisa is keen to honour Janet’s memory as part of her 30th anniversary celebrations, stating that Janet was an incredible mentor, friend and all around cheerleader for her and the team.

Lisa adds, “We all want to do Janet proud and as I look back over the last 30 years, I know I have so much to thank her for. I want to continue Janet’s legacy by supporting the next generation of stylists to realise their dreams and aspirations, just as she would have done.”

Lisa also extends her thanks to Directors Peter McDermott and Sandra Snowdon for all their continued support. For more information about Janet Maitland Hair Excellence, visit www.janetmaitland.com
