Thomas Hills reveals hottest hair trends for SS 2021

Thomas Hills, director of TH1 hair predicts the hottest hair trends for Spring Summer 2021.

ALL THE FEELS

If the seasonal runways were anything to go by, clients blessed with naturally textured hair should rejoice and learn to fully embrace it this season. Seen at Alberta Ferretti, Paco Rabanne, Jacquemus and Jason Wu, the ‘less is more’ trend this S/S21 is less about creating texture and more about exaggerating what your clients already have. I love these two looks from my About a Girl collection (left) and a recent collection I did with my Art Team (below), as they’re all about texture, quite literally in a big way.  Ditching the hairdryer and opting for the ‘airdryer’ is also key to this trend, something clients will have embraced even more during lockdown. It also screams personality and individuality, a key trend moving forward. Preparation is key, so offer product advice to help your clients perfect this style. I love Revlon Professional Restart Hydration Anti-Frizz Moisturizing Drops to protect locks and to keep hair healthy, shiny with more bounce to the ounce.

BRAID OF HEAVEN

This season I predict braids will take centre stage yet again, from whimsical waterfalls and double scalp styles (think Kim Kardashian and Rita Ora) to fishtails and classic French chic, clients love this trend as it allows a multifunctional approach to styling, allowing them to work out or WFH. Dior was a huge standout for braided locks this season, where pretty plaits and flyaway tendrils were twisted into bountiful buns. This beautiful braid (pictured) is one of my all-time favourites from my Iconic collection, and was crafted by using an intricate scalp braiding technique, while keeping the fringe super sleek and the ends crimped for some added oh la la.

FIX UP LOOK SHARP

Cropped hair caused quite a buzz at the S/S21 shows, where short sharp and chic was the order of the season. I particularly loved the looks at Zero + Maria Cornejo, Christopher John Rogers and Tom Ford, which paired perfectly with the 80s inspired make-up for the season. I also loved Claudia Li, where model Kennedy Yanko rocked the neon buzz cut to perfection. This really is a stand-out style and while it may look like it’s easy to maintain, it’s all about the initial cut, which is where clients really do need to look to you to create the perfect style initially. This look, from my Indistinguishable collection ramped it up a notch with a wonderfully wild streak – perfect if your clients are looking for something a bit extra this spring/summer season.

EAU YES!

This season, nothing could dampen our hair spirits, and a stand out trend for me was just showered, surf-style mermaid locks – encapsulating a true summer vibe (even if holidays are a distant memory at the moment). Case in point was Versace, where models rocked sea-swept locks that truly rocked the runways, the perfect accompaniment to the glossy shiny make-up. This look was also on show at Fendi, Acne Studios, Sportmax and Chloé, where hair was combed back and gelled for a “I just got out of the ocean like this” appeal.

What I love about this trend, and what makes it the perfect S/S21 winner is its versatility – it screams holiday vibe, and requires little or no styling, perfect for the lazy, hazy summer months. This image, from my About a Girl collection, (above left) really works this surf-chic trend that I’m fully feeling this season.

This is a great look for clients with naturally textured hair that usually requires heaps of styling, as it allows them to utilise a fail-safe way to look on trend. Recommend take-home heroes such as a sea-salt spray or Revlon Professional Restart Intense Recovery Mask, which can be left on to help achieve the look, while reconstructing from the inside out. Water hero you’ll be!
