DFAM Launches Empowerment-Focused Beauty Program in Puerto Rico

In March 2025, DFAM proudly launched its latest initiative in Puerto Rico: “Yo Misma Fui Mi Ruta” (“I Am My Own Path”), an employment development program created to empower survivors of domestic violence by supporting their journey toward economic independence.

Developed in collaboration with feminist nonprofit Taller Salud and Danny Lozada Salon, the program is designed to help participants break the cycle of violence through career training in the beauty industry. “Helping someone on their journey and providing them with the tools and access to new opportunities is what this program is about,” said Luis Burgos.

Central to the initiative is a three-month professional development course led by DFAM Board Member and Head of Education, Debbie Chirolla. “The goal is that participants will be able to increase their income by applying what they learn in the course,” Chirolla explained. “The program covers the basics of hairstyling and entrepreneurship skills, offering an on-ramp to those who want to pursue additional studies in the beauty field.” With extensive experience in beauty education and training, Chirolla volunteered her time and knowledge to guide participants through the initial stages of their professional journey.

The launch was celebrated with a breakfast reception on March 3, 2025, bringing together community partners, supporters, and volunteers. Attendees witnessed the first cohort of participants receive a full set of professional salon tools—including mannequin heads, haircutting shears, hair clippers, and blow dryers—thanks to generous donations from Hanzo Nation, Solano, Andis Clippers, and Giell.

The program’s success is rooted in strong community partnerships and the dedication of those involved. DFAM extended heartfelt thanks to Taller Salud, especially Ilia Vázquez and Ángela Cruz, for their leadership in participant recruitment and ongoing support. Since 1979, Taller Salud has championed women’s health, violence prevention, and economic empowerment through grassroots education and activism.

“Yo Misma Fui Mi Ruta” stands as more than a training program—it is a declaration of autonomy and hope for a better future. DFAM also acknowledges the vital contributions of Nicole Ortiz for her entrepreneurship course, Enrique Bello for his barbering workshop, and Necromancy for delivering a professional makeup workshop.

The courage and commitment of the women participating embody the program’s mission—and its name. Their journey has just begun, and their path is uniquely their own.
