Thick hair has incredible versatility, it holds shape beautifully, creates lasting volume, and is ideal for braids, twists, ponytails, and structured styles. The key challenge is that thick hair is naturally more prone to dryness and frizz, which is why every step of the routine matters. From cleansing and conditioning to prep, blow-drying, styling, and finishing, each stage is an opportunity to replenish moisture, smooth the cuticle, and create a polished, healthy-looking result,” says Teresa Romero, Creative Director for Sam Villa.
Tips
- Cleansing: Focus on hydration – a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner is the first line of defense in managing frizz and supporting a smoother finish. Spend a little more time focusing on the mid-lengths to ends and use a wide tooth comb to help evenly distribute. To maintain moisture and improve manageability, use a deep conditioning treatment 2X weekly.
- Blow Drying: Apply smoothing products that add moisture and shine and protect hair from heat. Work in small sections and make sure each section is fully dried before moving on to the next. Completely drying hair helps to lock out frizz. Using a boar bristle brush will create the tension needed to smooth the cuticle, reduce flyaways and increase shine.
- Styling: When using a hot tool, avoid tension and excessive heat. Use a good heat protectant, small sections and allow each section to cool before any further styling.
- Finishing: Again, think hydration…lightweight oils, lotions or creams to add to the smoothing process and to add shine. Make sure to apply products evenly through hair so each strand is moisturized and defend against frizz. Avoid sea salt sprays, they are designed to add volume and texture and can open the cuticle.
“Every step in your routine is an opportunity to improve the final result. When you take the time to hydrate, and smooth the cuticle throughout the process, thick hair becomes more manageable, more reflective, and far less prone to frizz. Those extra few minutes pay off with a polished finish that lasts,” adds Romero.
